Bizarre: Couple Dies After Drinking Limoncello in Vietnam
Limoncello can give you horrific hangovers. That suddenly seems a lot less serious when you read the following news: a British-South African couple in Vietnam did not survive drinking limoncello. And that wasn’t because the hangover was fatal.
No, the cause of their tragic deaths was methanol poisoning. This probably happened because the limoncello contained contaminated alcohol; the drink had been brewed by a local restaurant. An innocent toast to what were undoubtedly festive holidays proved fatal to them last Christmas Eve.
Death from methanol poisoning
Several bottles of alcohol were found at the scene. The autopsy report therefore shows that the methanol in the limoncello killed the couple. Creepy: this is not the first time tourists in Asia have died from methanol poisoning. Just a few weeks before this dramatic incident in Vietnam, 6 tourists in Laos suffered the same fate.
Methanol is dangerous because it is converted into toxic substances in your body. It can leave you blind and disabled and, in the worst case—as happened in Vietnam and Laos—cost you your life. The advice? Be careful with homemade alcoholic drinks offered to you abroad. Especially if you’re not 100% sure what they contain.
