Blue Band must stop selling Roombeter
Blue Band’s Roombeter received the Golden Wind Egg last year for most misleading food product, but that wasn’t the end of it. The court has ruled that the product is so misleading that Blue Band must stop selling it.
Finally, real justice, because seriously… The name and packaging are so cunning that consumers are rightly angry when they are duped like this. Blue Band is pretending as if nothing is wrong. The packaging is supposedly clear about the fact that the plant-based butter is not a dairy product. After all, it says on the packaging that it is a “100 percent plant-based alternative”.
But it’s not that simple. Roombeter is spelled with an ‘e’ instead of an ‘o’, and it comes in the familiar golden wrapper. Show someone this packaging and then ask what kind of product it is. Almost everyone says: butter!
No cream, no dairy
Cream, dairy… that is precisely what this plant-based butter alternative does not contain. The Dutch Dairy Organisation therefore demanded a ban on the name Roombeter. Because by using the name, Blue Band is acting in breach of European regulations, according to the court as well. Those regulations state that the word ‘cream’ may only be used for dairy products.
Blue Band must therefore stop selling Roombeter within three months.
Honest about the contents
As far as we’re concerned, a good decision. Consumers are frequently lied to and manipulated by misleading packaging. It’s time for transparency, including when it comes to plant-based products.
