Brigadeiros: Brazil’s national delicacy

brigadeiro's sweet bob

Brigadeiros are Brazil’s national delicacy. These chocolate balls are sweet, deliciously creamy and beautiful to look at too. Another plus: you don’t have to travel to Brazil for them, because they’re simply available in Amsterdam.

The chocolate ball is named after Brazilian Eduardo Gomes, an air force brigadier and presidential candidate in the 1940s. During the campaign for Gomes, women made the delicacy to raise money for his campaign. They called it the brigadeiro.

Not a truffle or bonbon

The brigadeiro looks like a truffle and a bonbon, but according to André Credit of Sweet Bob in Amsterdam, it tastes like neither. “Brigadeiros are much creamier, softer and more unique.” Brigadeiros are made with condensed milk, butter and chocolate. The original brigadeiro is made with milk chocolate, but there are many variations on this sweet delicacy. For the ultimate brigadeiro experience, enjoy one with a cup of Brazilian coffee.

Sweet Bob

Sweet Bob is the only brigadeiro shop in the Netherlands and sells no fewer than 45 different varieties. From salted caramel to stroopwafel, which André says is very popular with tourists.
