Can tab snapped off? No stress with this trick

BlikjeStuk-Favorflav

Last Sunday, panic broke out while making the very best shakshuka. Just as I was about to open the can of tomato purée, I suddenly found myself holding the tab in one hand and a SEALED can of tomato purée in the other. Thank god, I still managed to open the can with this trick.

How it works

Opening a can whose tab has snapped off is super simple. Grab a small spoon from the kitchen drawer and place it with the rounded side on the can and the hollow side facing you, where the tab used to be. Hold the can firmly and gently push the spoon into the can so that the top opens. Then work the spoon underneath the top and push it upwards with the spoon and tadaaa: the can is open!

Safety first

Okay, this method is easy peasy, but it does come with a few side notes. Never put your fingers inside the can to get underneath the top and push it up, because, you know, the edges of cans are razor-sharp ninja knives. This trick also works best—and safest—with cans that have a tab, because it is easier to remove the top from these. With those old-fashioned cans without a tab, it is downright life-threatening, and here’s why.
