Can we stop selling food in the shape of Christmas trees?

AH Excellent Scharrel mini kerstboompjes

Don’t get me wrong: I’m probably the biggest Christmas fan there is. I start listening to Christmas music at the end of August, and sometime in early October I begin seriously considering putting up the Christmas tree (this year, I couldn’t hold out past November 1). But there’s one thing I’m really done with, and that’s all the food being sold in Christmas tree shapes.

Literally e-ve-ry-where I look in the supermarket, I see Christmas tree food. Christmas tree cheese, Christmas tree rolls, Christmas tree chicken nuggets, Christmas tree butter… My latest discovery: Christmas tree spekkoek, at Lidl. Not to mention all the little Santas, reindeer and Christmas stars smiling brightly at us from the shelves.

No processed food, please

Before you take me for the Grinch: I can explain. Most of the food we buy at the supermarket is processed enough already. Why does it need to be processed even more? At Christmas, I simply want delicious, well-prepared and preferably minimally processed food on my plate. Vegetarian or not, I don’t care. But not in the shape of a tree or some other trendy Christmas figure. If I want to see a tree, I’ll just look at my own beautiful one (which I happily leave up until February).

Right, and now I’m going back to the Christmas wreath cookies.
