Not gourmet dining again this Christmas? These are the 6 best alternatives

Are you one of the millions of Dutch people who gather cozily around the tabletop grill every year at Christmas? And would you finally like to do something different this year (read: something that won’t make your clothes smell for 3 weeks)? These are 6 fun and delicious alternatives that are perfect for the holidays.

Fondue
Classic, but oh-so delicious and cozy. Plus: there are all kinds of possibilities when it comes to fondue. That applies both to what you put in the fondue pot (cheese? Broth? Chocolate?) and… what you dip into the fondue (vegetables, fish, meat, bread, fruit…). You can even give it a theme if you like. Italian, for example, with mozzarella, Parmesan and all kinds of delicious Italian side dishes. Our ultimate tip: pizza fondue!

Winter BBQ
Barbecuing in summer is sooo 2021. Why not fire up the BBQ in winter too? Add some atmospheric lighting, light an extra heat source if necessary (a fire pit is perfect) and stock up on delicious BBQ meat, fish and vegetables. Yes, you may need to check the weather forecast beforehand, but if it’s not raining, this is truly a fantastic option for Christmas.
Pizzarette
Sticking with the pizza theme: the pizzarette is one of our all-time favorites and i-de-al for Christmas. Everyone builds their own pizza and bakes it in one of the mini ovens. It’s a little bit like gourmet dining, so it’s also perfect if you’re secretly still considering bringing that tabletop grill down from the attic.

Raclette
Cheese lovers, pay attention: raclette will make your cheese-loving heart beat faster. The word raclette comes from ‘racler’, the French word for ‘scrape’, and that is exactly what you do: scrape melted cheese over all kinds of side dishes. What do you need? At the very least, good melting cheese, a heat source and side dishes of your choice. Potatoes, for example, but vegetables and various types of meat are also perfect for your raclette evening. Either way, it will give you genuine après-ski feelings.

Making sushi
If you’re a huge sushi fan, chances are you’ve made sushi yourself at some point. So why not do it at Christmas too? Everyone at the table rolls their own sushi (tip: get this handy sushi gadget) and shares their creations with one another. Fun and incredibly delicious.
Making crêpes
Are you a real sweet tooth? Then you’ll love this: there’s a way to eat nothing but sweet food for your entire Christmas dinner. With a crêpe maker, that is. With it, you can… yes, make crêpes. All evening long. Great, right?
