10 tips to get rid of gourmet cooking smells

During the festive season, people in the Netherlands love enjoying the quintessentially Dutch tradition of convivial gourmet cooking. The delicious aromas from those little pans are fantastic, but the greasy smell that lingers in your home for days is less pleasant. Fortunately, thanks to these handy tips from gourmet guru Danny Jansen, that is now a thing of the past. Take advantage of his expertise and quickly get rid of that nasty, greasy gourmet smell. Read on for a gourmet feast without the lingering odors!

How to gourmet without the smell
1. The smell problem is so serious that 24Kitchen once even created a genuine Anti-Gourmet Smell Spray. Missed out on the rare spray? Don’t worry, there are fortunately still nine other options.
2. For example, turn on the extractor hood, on the lowest setting of course. The highest setting is the most effective, but the noise probably won’t do much for the conviviality of gourmet cooking.
3. Light all your scented candles. Or at least as many as possible, because it may be wise to stick to one scent. Otherwise, your home will smell like a cheap brothel in no time (Danny: “not that I know from experience what it smells like there, by the way.”)
4. After gourmet cooking, put a small bowl of methylated spirits or vinegar in the room. This neutralizes the smell.
5. Open a window. Not too far, otherwise everyone will be shivering behind their little pan.
6. Heat water, vinegar, lemon peels and a few cloves, nutmeg and a cinnamon stick in a small pan over low heat. Within an hour, your home will smell wonderful again.
7. Thanks to Roy Donders: heat a small pan of water and fabric softener on the stove. Small side note: this method can release toxic fumes.
8. Burn a dried bay leaf.
9. Make a few pots of coffee. Just like vinegar, coffee neutralizes the smell of gourmet cooking.
10. But perhaps this is the best tip of all: go gourmet cooking at someone else’s house. The simple sentence, ‘I’ll take care of the food and drinks, then we’ll gourmet at your place!’ almost always works.
