Rapper Drake is looking for a chef for his new sushi restaurant Pick 6ix in Toronto, Canada. And he is not the only one looking for culinary staff. Celebrities opening a restaurant or bar are hip & happening. Check out these celebrities with their own ‘star restaurants’.
Drake: sushi dushi
First of all, rapper Drake, who, alongside his first restaurant Fring’s, is now also opening sushi restaurant Pick 6ix in his hometown of Toronto. Fun fact: for his sushi restaurant, he had two people from Rotterdam design the interior. The restaurant’s interior is equipped with the necessary bling, from marble and gold to velvet and brass. A little Dutch glory in the culinary showbiz world after all.
Ludacris: Southern comfort food
Hip-hop artist Ludacris has his own restaurant, Chicken-n-Beer, at Atlanta airport. Here they serve comfort food from the southern states, such as waffles with pecans and whiskey sauce with maple syrup, hummus made from boiled peanuts with Cajun spices, and even signature dishes named after him, such as Luda’s Chicken.
Channing Tatum: fun dining
Actor Channing Tatum is the proud owner of Saints and Sinners, a restaurant-bar in the lively Burlesque district of New Orleans. They serve extravagant dishes here (in their own words: fun dining, not fine dining) and have an impressively extensive cocktail menu.
Nadal, Iglesias and Gasol: trendy tapas
Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, singer Enrique Iglesias and basketball player Pau Gasol jointly opened a contemporary tapas restaurant, Tatel, in Miami at the beginning of this year. They serve traditional Spanish dishes with a modern twist. Earlier, the same trio had already opened a gastronomic venue under the same name in Madrid.
Scarlett Johansson: gourmet popcorn
Actress Scarlett Johansson is co-owner of the trendy Yummy Pop in the heart of Paris. Here, they transform the much-loved cinema snack popcorn into a culinary masterpiece. Flavours include truffle Parmesan, olive oil, pepper and salt, Canadian maple syrup and good old cheddar cheese.
Lady Gaga: Italian roots
Since 2010, pop singer Lady Gaga (herself half Italian) has been co-owner of Joanne Trattoria, an Italian eatery in New York. They serve classic Italian dishes such as arancini della nonna (Sicilian rice balls with olive oil and Parmesan), Tuscan bean salad, homemade focaccia and an extensive wine pairing called ‘The Gaga-collection’.
BN-ers do it too
In the Netherlands, too, we are seeing the trend of celebrities opening their own hospitality businesses. Gordon, for example, now has three locations of his coffee chain Blushing to his name in Amsterdam, Blaricum and Rotterdam. We also have actor Cas Jansen, known from Allstarts and Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden, who is the proud owner of Venster 33 in De Pijp in Amsterdam. And not to forget Sunnery James, the sweetheart of international supermodel Doutzen Kroes, who opened the trendy restaurant W36 in a former coffeeshop on Warmoesstraat in Amsterdam.
