Chocolate Factory in Leeuwarden

Mellow chocolate factory recently opened in Leeuwarden. Here, you can buy fair chocolate made on site in the chocolate workshop and enjoy a chocolate cappuccino in the restaurant.

After several major trips to distant countries, where Rienk Edens visited many cocoa plantations, the entrepreneur recently settled in Leeuwarden. Here, he opened a chocolate factory and restaurant in one on Tweebaksmarkt. As soon as you walk in, the warm scent of cocoa fills your nose.
Fair
During his visits to cocoa plantations, Rienk saw how important humane working conditions and a decent wage are for farmers and their employees. Fair trade is therefore highly valued at Mellow. The cocoa used is purchased directly from local businesses.
Flavour
A good cocoa bean is half the work, according to the owner. At Mellow, they use two relatively unknown, high-quality cocoa beans with a delicious flavour: Trinitario and Criollo.
From the moment the beans arrive, Rienk determines the final flavour of the chocolate bars himself as much as possible by using the ‘bean to bar’ strategy. The processing of the cocoa beans is entirely in his hands, from roasting and grinding the beans to wrapping the bars in the chocolate factory.
Restaurant
The tables in the restaurant explain how the cocoa bean industry works. There, you can read all about the countries of origin, the history of the cocoa bean and the long working days of farmers on the plantations.
The menu consists of small dishes to share and changes regularly. The kitchen serves a highly diverse range of dishes: there is ceviche with peppers and lime and a vegan salad, as well as bavette with chocolate jus. Wash it all down with organic soft drinks, homemade cocoa iced tea or a cocoa beer.
