Thirsty tales

Cin Cin! This Italian beer gives you an instant holiday feeling

Birra Moretti

Are you, like me, a huge fan of Italian cuisine? Then you’re probably also familiar with the delicious Italian beer Birra Moretti. If you haven’t tried it yet, keep reading about Italy’s favorite beer, which you can now also buy in the Netherlands.

Cin Cin!

With Birra Moretti, you bring the feeling of Italy into your home in a single sip. It’s a wonderfully easy-drinking beer. Spicy but not too bitter, pleasantly light and smooth, with a hint of citrus aroma and a subtle sweetness that pairs easily with all kinds of Italian dishes, such as pasta carbonara and pizza margherita. Or how about Uova alla Piemontese? It’s such a great combination that we don’t want to keep the recipe from you (see below).

From local beer to global brand

Birra Moretti originated in Udine, a quiet provincial town between Venice and the Alps. In 1859, Luigi Moretti started his small beer and ice factory here. At the opening, Luigi could never have imagined how large his brainchild would become. It took off at the end of the twentieth century, when Birra Moretti became available outside Friuli as well. A host of new fans was born. 163 years later, the production process has remained almost unchanged—and this is what it looks like:

Beer cocktails as an aperitif

Beer is a perfect aperitivo drink, especially refreshing beers with a soft lemon flavor, such as Birra Moretti. Delicious with a breadstick wrapped in Italian ham, for example. But a beer cocktail also works very well as an aperitif. Don’t make it too sweet, though, as that will dampen your appetite. Tip: try making a cocktail by pouring equal parts Birra Moretti, Campari, lime juice and grapefruit juice into a glass, then topping it with plenty of ice cubes.

From Luigi to Bob

Luigi could never have imagined this either, but an alcohol-free version is now also available. With Birra Moretti Zero, the alcohol is very carefully removed from the beer through a brewing process. And seriously: this really is an excellent beer for anyone who doesn’t want to or can’t drink alcohol.

A little bit of Italy at home

Previously, you could only drink Birra Moretti and Birra Moretti Zero abroad, but here’s some good news: the cheerful Italian beer is now available in more than forty countries worldwide, including the Netherlands. Outside the hospitality industry, you can find the beer at Albert Heijn and Jumbo in six-pack cans, in the classic brown returnable bottles in six-packs, and in a crate of 24. Make some Uova alla Piemontese to go with it. Saluti!

How to make Uova alla Piemontese

INGREDIENTS FOR FOUR PEOPLE
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh parsley
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh oregano
1 large courgette
Olive oil
Salt and pepper

HOW TO MAKE UOVA ALLA PIEMONTESE
Place the eggs in boiling water for 8 minutes. Then ‘shock’ them under cold running water. Peel the eggs, cut them lengthwise and scoop out the yolks. Set the yolks aside in a bowl.

Add some salt, pepper and olive oil to the yolks and stir with a fork until smooth and creamy. Mix in the finely chopped parsley, then spoon the mixture into the egg-white halves. Cut the courgette lengthwise into 8 thin strips. Drizzle them with olive oil, some salt and pepper, and the finely chopped oregano. Fry the courgette strips over high heat in a grill pan until nicely crisp. Serve the courgette strips with the stuffed egg halves on top.
