Coca-Cola’s new caps are incredibly irritating

It’s time for a little complaining. I’ve always been a strong proponent of never change a winning team, even though I do understand that brands need to keep innovating. That’s why I enthusiastically welcome new flavors, such as Rosalia’s collaboration with Coca-Cola. Great fun. But dear people at Coca-Cola, could you please leave the current products alone?

They’re genuinely good just the way they are. And by that I mean the taste, but certainly also the packaging.

Your twist-off caps are now awful

I had missed the memo that Coca-Cola had deliberately changed its caps, so when I got a new bottle of Cola Zero, I kept pulling at the cap that wouldn’t come off. A few days later I read about it online; Coca-Cola has altered the caps so that they no longer come off the bottle. WHY?

It’s so incredibly impractical, because the cap isn’t attached tightly at all — so every time I pour, the thing twists downward and I have to react quickly, otherwise the cola comes o-ver-y-where through the cap. But that’s not exactly easy either, given that I’m already holding the bottle with one hand. So now I’m clumsily pouring a simple glass of cola every time, to the point that I’m considering switching to cans or giving up Cola Zero.

Unfortunately, there’s no good news

Why did Coca-Cola do this? To combat littering. Personally, I think it’s incredibly rude not to throw your plastic bottle in the bin in the first place, but I also don’t understand the recklessness of separating only the cap — you usually throw away the whole combo deal, right? Apparently not, and it gets even worse; from 2024 onward, all soft-drink bottles will be required to have this. The horror. Luckily, there’s still plenty of time to practise…
