Albert Heijn is going to sell SEA Water: seawater turned into drinking water
Wait, hold on: seawater to drink? This sounds bizarre, groundbreaking and brilliant all at once, don’t you think? The new Dutch SEA Water comes from brothers Tammo and Jort Wildschut. With it, they hope to tackle the battle against water scarcity. Albert Heijn is going to sell their water cartons.
The Netherlands, like many other countries, is surrounded by seawater. So how cool would it be to get drinking water not from limited water sources, but simply from the sea?
“It’s time to look at water in a different way. Seventy percent of the earth is covered with water, yet water scarcity is a huge and growing problem worldwide. In the Netherlands too, a drinking-water shortage threatens to develop in the future,” say the brothers. By using the infinite source that is the sea, SEA Water shows that there is another way to drink water.
SEA Water powered by solar energy
Locally sourced seawater turned into drinking water—how does that work? Through desalination technology. This technology is not new, by the way, but these are almost always energy-intensive facilities that depend on fossil fuels. SEA Water uses a new, energy-efficient facility powered entirely by solar energy. This makes SEA Water the first company in the world to make sustainably filtered seawater available to consumers.
SEA Water’s first facility was recently installed on the North Sea. Hopefully, more will follow soon, both here and around the world.
From the end of August, SEA Water will be available at 250 Albert Heijn locations throughout the Netherlands.
