Corona-proof outing: forage your own oysters

Oysters, we absolutely love them! You too? Then go on an oyster expedition and forage your own oysters. That means unlimited oysters, completely corona-proof and… free!

Fishing your own oysters out from between the stones in the shallow seawater and then eating them yourself à la minute — you can’t get oysters any fresher than this. And our little country just happens to be known for its top-quality oysters, especially in Zeeland. Zeeland is therefore the perfect place to go on an oyster expedition yourself.
Forage oysters here
You may know Zeeland oysters, or more accurately Japanese oysters, by the name creuse. This oyster species grows abundantly in Zeeland. There are various places, such as Goese Sas, Yerseke beach and Scheldeoord, where the shells are there for the taking. But you don’t only find oysters on the Zeeland beaches; you can also pick oysters on Texel and Terschelling. You can easily check exactly where you can, and especially where you are allowed to, pick oysters using this wild-foraging guide.

Check, check
If you’re going oyster foraging, you obviously need to go when the tide is low. So always check in advance when low tide is at your oyster-gathering spot. It’s also important to know that oyster season runs from September to April. Apart from that, all you need to bring is a bucket, a chisel to pry the oysters off the stones and, of course, an oyster knife, so you can slurp them down straight away.
Oyster feast with toppings
To make it a truly top-notch oyster feast, naturally bring your own oyster toppings too. They’re delicious au naturel, but oysters with a splash of gin, spicy fish sauce or tequila are truly great combinations! By the way, did you know that the oyster even has its own day?
