Count your savings: this is the very best time to do your grocery shopping

For some, grocery shopping is a daily outing; others prefer to stock up all at once. After work, early in the morning or at the weekend: the day and time when you tick off your shopping list affects what you buy, and therefore also how much you ultimately pay at the checkout.

The basic rule for making sure your trolley isn’t filled with unnecessary groceries is not to go to the supermarket when you’re hungry. Everything looks extra tempting then, so you’re more likely to buy it. So head out with a full stomach, but what time and on which day?

The very best time to do your grocery shopping

The best time to do your grocery shopping is between 10 and 11 in the morning. Your day has already got under way, you’re no longer groggy with sleep, and your brain is fresh as a daisy for a trip to the supermarket. This means you can make better choices, and you’re also much less likely to forget something. You can also keep impulse purchases under better control, simply because you’re focused on your list.

Wednesday

As for the days, Wednesday is the best. On average, supermarkets are less busy in the middle of the week than on Mondays or Saturdays, for example. Crowds also affect how much you buy, because you can be distracted by ten shopping trolleys and clashing baskets around you.

And above all, don’t let yourself be tempted by the last aisle full of crisps just because you’ve spent a little longer waiting in line. Does Wednesday morning between 10 and 11 not quite fit your schedule? Then go on Saturday morning, when (lots of) people are still turning over and going back to sleep in bed.
