Craving spinach? Bad luck: a spinach shortage is looming
The past few weeks have been ridiculously hot and then ridiculously autumnal. The result: acute wardrobe stress (shorts or rain gear?) and a spinach shortage. Seriously, the unsettled weather is causing spinach scarcity on supermarket shelves.
Industry organisation GroenteFruit knows exactly why there is so little fresh spinach in supermarket aisles. ‘The vegetable grew too quickly, or too slowly. Spinach is a natural product,’ director Richard Schouten told NOS. Other leafy vegetables are also suffering from the changeable weather, such as head lettuce.
Don’t panic!
There’s no need to panic; there are alternatives. Frozen spinach and creamed spinach are not affected by the crazy weather. They were grown earlier and can be stored for longer. Okay, that doesn’t help if you want to make a spinach salad. But take comfort: spinach grows very quickly, so there’s a good chance that new spinach will be back in stores in a few weeks. If you really have no patience, you can grow spinach yourself.
