Cream Cheese Tea: Hugely Popular and a Saviour in Times of Need

In China, people queue for hours for it: cream cheese tea. Yes, really, you read that right: cream cheese tea. As in: tea with a layer of salty cream cheese on top.

In China, it is called naigaicha and it is hugely popular among Chinese millennials, especially the tea from the chain Heytea.
Tea comeback
We spotted this trend a while ago, but what do you know? According to De Volkskrant, this seemingly crazy drink could well be the salvation of China’s centuries-old tea culture. It could bring young people closer to traditional tea. ‘I want to make tea cool again among Chinese millennials,’ says 27-year-old Heytea founder Nie Yunchen, outlining his mission.
Instagrammable
Many young people find traditional Chinese tea too bitter, too cumbersome because of all the rituals surrounding it and—not that I can imagine why—not Instagrammable enough. Because these cream cheese tea creations are true works of art that the average Starbucks latte could still learn a thing or two from. Think: pink and yellow tea topped with a dollop of cloud-like cream cheese. What more could a millennial want? Queue for hours, apparently. Because that is part of the experience, according to the young people waiting in line.
Delicious, too
And the taste? According to the experts, it is not bad at all. The combination of salty cream cheese and lightly sweet tea actually works surprisingly well. So well, in fact, that traditional tea lovers in China are wholeheartedly embracing the entire craze. What do you think? Worth trying?
