#daretowonder: what happens to a pig’s anus after slaughter?
Sometimes there are questions that genuinely have never crossed your mind, but suddenly the answer is dropped right into your lap. Funny enough, that often happens on Keuringsdienst van Waarde, and now it’s happened again. They came up with the answer to the question: ‘what happens to a pig’s anus after slaughter?‘ Yeeeah, go ahead and think about that one.
I had never given it any thought, but my fellow FavorFlav writer Sharon had, of course. For example, she had long been aware of the culinary rumors surrounding a pig’s sphincter.
What? Is calamari actually pig’s anus?
No, thankfully not — but you did have a little scare there, didn’t you? This really was a rumor that used to circulate, after CDA Member of the European Parliament Esther de Lange announced it during a presentation about food fraud. No worries: it’s a lie. So you can continue eating calamari with peace of mind. But what do they actually do with it?
It can absolutely end up on your plate if you order Gopchang or Makchang in South Korea. This dish consists of a pig’s offal, so there’s a very good chance you’ll also get a piece of sphincter. I’m not an adventurous eater at all, so I’ll never order this dish in my life, but if you’re curious: go for it! Pig’s anus isn’t unhealthy at all (it has the same nutritional values as other parts of a pig), so it’s perfectly fine as a snack. Let me know what it tastes like?
