David Chang on Netflix: ‘Ugly Delicious’

FavorFlav’s hero David ‘Momofuku’ Chang is starting a new food series of his own on February 23. In this Netflix Original, titled Ugly Delicious, Chang eats his way through a whole lot of ugly delicious comfort food.

Six years ago, David Chang last had his own ‘series’. The first season of the long-running series The Mind of a Chef extensively explores his culinary inspirations and obsessions. And believe it or not, since then, the chef who still hasn’t opened a Momofuku restaurant in the Netherlands has only appeared in other series.

Bourdain-esque

But now there’s Ugly Delicious. Netflix promises a Bourdain-esque journey of discovery through dishes that build bridges between cultures: cultural fusion food. That means lots of shooting the breeze about food with the usual Chang suspects; culinary rebels such as René Redzepi, Korean street-food legend Roy Choi and food writer Michael Pollan. But also with Chang’s mother and the co-star from the brilliant Netflix comedy Master of None, Eric Wareheim.

Lots of food dripping with fat, oil or melted cheese

According to Chang, the series is a safe haven for strong opinions and honest conversations about food. So no politically correct talk or imagery in Ugly Delicious. The most striking scene in the newly released trailer, in which Chang cuts deeply into his hands, speaks volumes in that regard.

Fat

Alongside clear opinions, there’s plenty of comfort food, from pizza to pork belly and dim sum. Much of it is food that Chang consistently tags on his Instagram account with the hashtag #uglydelicious. Typical Chang foods that drip with fat, oil, melted cheese or broth and don’t look appealing, but do elicit plenty of approving grunts from diners as soon as they sink their teeth into them.
