Delivery review: Arles’ delivery meal

fiets-eten-bezorgen

In this crazy corona era, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily eating out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are opening. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting the hospitality industry. Today: Arles in Amsterdam.

A one-way ticket to Provence

In Arles, you briefly find yourself in Provence. Chefs were lured away from the French Arles especially for this charming neo-bistro to come and cook in this cozily decorated little place in Amsterdam’s Pijp neighborhood. Here you’ll find delicious French dishes and wines, accompanied by jazzy tunes from the chef’s playlist. Arles has also recently started delivering to people’s homes, to make sure their hungry regulars don’t become malnourished.

The delivery

The three-course menu is pleasantly straightforward. Mackerel, a choice of fish, meat or vegetarian, and the signature dessert: riz-au-lait. The order is delivered by the friendly-looking Joao Pedro, armed with professional face covering, fingerless gloves, a winter hat and a camouflage-print jacket. It’s war. Especially for me, he braved the city with all its coughing and sneezing people. The bag contains three neat containers and a tiny container of fruitinettes with a tea light hidden underneath, but I only discover that after dinner. Fortunately, it stays light until late these days.

The menu

The mackerel is served with kewpie, or Japanese mayonnaise. Mayonnaise with a slight bite. Alongside it is puffed red rice, lovingly covered with a canopy of coriander. The dish is subtle, but tasty.

For the main course, I chose the slow-cooked veal cheek. A dish that appears on menus rather too often these days, but is of course ideal for home delivery. It comes with pleasant mashed potatoes and bimi. A dish that offers a little comfort in these confusing times.

As is the dessert: the famous, creamy, vanilla-like riz-au-lait with caramel and freshly roasted nuts.

Can Arles join us at the table more often?

Absolutely! The complete three-course menu costs € 29,50, for which you get a delicious meal served up. You pay the same amount for a nice bottle of wine, but of course you can share that. Available to order from Thursday through Sunday via Uber Eats.
