Delivery review: Floor’s Surinamese catering meal
During this crazy corona period, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily eating out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. Today: Floor’s Surinamese catering in Amsterdam.
The delivery
The Surinamese bike courier is startled when I ask if I can take a photo and jumps aside. In his plastic bag are three warm containers. One with the soup, one with the starter and a large one with the roti. Home-style wrapped in aluminium foil, so they have survived the journey from Amsterdam’s trendy Goud-West neighbourhood to the city centre while staying warm. Included is a self-designed flyer in a garish Surinamese style, with the message that you can order through their own app with a discount or a free drink.
A dollop of peanut sauce
The saoto soup, or Surinamese chicken soup, tastes fine. Shredded chicken, lots of bean sprouts and an egg. For colour, something green, such as celery leaves, could have been added. But with Surinamese food, presentation simply isn’t the point. The teloh bakkeljauw consists of cassava cut into thick chips and fried, topped with a delicious blob of peanut sauce. Alongside it is the dried, salted cod. Actually, the combination with the peanut sauce is a little strange, and the cassava could easily have been served with just the salt cod, but hey, sometimes peanut sauce makes a perfectly good culinary lubricant.
And what about the roti?
The roti is undoubtedly number one. Like a true pale-faced person, I ordered it with chicken breast, because I simply can’t gnaw on bones. As a caveman, the entire pack would have laughed at me. The enormous pancake, the masala sauce, the firm potatoes and yardlong beans are all well seasoned, and I decide to push the cutlery aside after all and use the roti bread for its intended purpose. I let out a primal scream. The cat looks at me reproachfully, as only cats can.
Can Floor join us more often?
Absolutely, because those Surinamese caterers sure know how to cook, and the prices are very reasonable too. The teloh and soup cost €4.50 each, and the roti only €8.50. I’m also curious about all the different nasi and bami dishes, although I’m afraid that next time I’ll simply order the roti again, because sometimes you need certainties in life. Especially now.
