Delivery review: Maris Piper’s takeaway meal

During these crazy corona times, restaurants are closed, so we’re enjoying a nice meal out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are popping up. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting the hospitality industry. Today: Maris Piper in Amsterdam.

Who is Maris Piper?
What, not who. Maris Piper is the British Bintje. After the success of Guts&Glory (now GUTS), things suddenly moved at lightning speed for the cheerful trio Guillaume, Johanneke and Freek. They opened the successful Breda and, not much later, Maris Piper Brasserie & Chef’s Table, as well as a little pita place in the Foodhallen. As well as being a potato variety, Maris Piper is a stylish and romantic restaurant in De Pijp, in a location where several predecessors have bitten the dust. The brasserie dishes aren’t exclusively British, but show influences from various cuisines. The dishes are bold, with highly surprising highlights, as we know from the trio’s other establishments, ‘the three from Breda’.
What’s on the menu?
Just like at the brasserie, the takeaway menu is extensive and tempting. Beef Wellington or sharing dishes for 3/4 people, a proper caviar section, a large selection of starters: from Iberico ham to burrata, artichoke, lobster or eel, plus a manageable number of main courses and desserts and three tempting cocktails. If you eat out often, you keep coming across the same dishes, and it’s no different in this takeaway era. The poussin, the asparagus, the rhubarb crumble. They bring back memories of previous delivery experiences that are almost impossible to beat. That makes the decision even more difficult.

What are we eating?
For the second time this week, we’re going for the asparagus, because now is simply the season for it. To start, Dutch shrimp in cocktail sauce (very seventies) with avocado, followed by the rhubarb. I decide to start with a cocktail, because it’s a celebration. You have to make your own celebration. Everything is served in a bag, complete with wet towels and two placemats that transform the dining table into Maris Piper at a glance. Nice!

At the table!
We start with the Bloody Maris, which is wonderfully spicy and also looks beautiful. It comes in a bottle with a wax seal and a little bag containing lime juice and instructions attached to the neck. The shrimp on a box spring of butter lettuce with cocktail sauce and avocado also taste very good. The amount of chilli powder once again makes for a rather spicy experience, but combined with the creamy avocado, it’s a delicious whole.

The Asparagus Flamande and baby potatoes come in a bag that needs to be held under the hot tap for a while and then glazed in the pan. The amount of baby potatoes is somewhat meagre, so I’m glad I accidentally ordered mashed potatoes as a side dish. The rhubarb crumble tastes wonderfully fresh and crisp and is gone far too quickly.

Can Maris Piper join us more often?
Yes, the menu was very tasty and presented professionally, so we’ll definitely order here again. The cocktail is a compulsory opening act. It costs €9. The shrimp are €17.50, the asparagus €17.75, and the dessert costs €8. Reasonable in itself, but if you’re tempted by all the options and wines on offer, the bill can quickly add up.
But hey, you don’t eat out every day! And it’s all about making sure that soon we can once again enjoy ourselves in all these restaurants, right? Until then, fortunately you can order from Maris Piper via the delivery heroes at Deliveroo.
