Delivery review: Pesca’s delivery meal

During these crazy corona times, restaurants are closed, so we’re enjoying a nice meal out at home. Fortunately, lots of new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting our beloved hospitality industry. Today: Pesca in Amsterdam.

This restaurant calls itself a Theater of Fish. And rightly so, because everything here revolves around one thing: fish. That becomes immediately clear when you enter the restaurant. As we know from, for example, Spanish restaurants, fish are displayed here as if on a market stall. Juicy oysters, mighty mussels, heavenly salmon and giant tuna. This restaurant already had some experience with takeaway, because guests are given a buzzer that signals when their fish is ready. Now you can also have the fish dishes delivered to your home, choosing between a ready-to-eat dinner or a meal that you have to prepare yourself (partly). To challenge myself, I choose the latter.
The delivery
You can choose from various starters, main courses and desserts. An oven is necessary for several of the main courses, and I don’t have one, so I opt for a few cold and hot starters. In the afternoon, the doorbell rings. A cheerful young man arrives on a cargo bike and hands me two white paper bags. ‘Wait, I have something else for you. Tadaaa: a bottle of Sancerre!’

The bags are filled with containers in various sizes, labelled PESCA, sturdy black napkins and wet towels bearing the same logo. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into it. An envelope contains clear heating instructions for the hot dishes and a general letter (‘Dear Pescatarian…’). The dishes go into the fridge for a while, as there’s no rush. To fortify myself, I pour a full glass of Sancerre. Fish need to swim, after all, right?

Scallops with beurre noisette
The scallops. A well-known benchmark for determining the quality of a restaurant. Now I have to subject myself to the litmus test. Step by step, I fry the scallops and melt the beurre noisette with a filling of capers, parsley, hazelnut and shallot, then pour it over the scallops. The scallops taste phenomenal, but that says more about the excellent preparation than about my own culinary skills.

I also manage to fry the prawns to a beautiful golden brown. They’re topped with salsa verde and garlic oil. The wet towels come in handy. Dessert is a flavourful chocolate mousse with red fruit and coconut balls, which thankfully requires no preparation.

Can Pesca join us at the table more often?
The fish tastes incredibly fresh, and the dishes, delivery and presentation are all very well cared for, so we’ll definitely be casting a line here more often! Pesca’s delicious dishes can be ordered through the restaurant’s webshop. You can choose between ready-to-eat starters and main courses or dishes for which you have to perform a few simple steps yourself—something that naturally benefits the flavour and presentation.
How much does it cost?
The starters cost around 10 euros, the main courses between 18 and 20 euros, and dessert 7 euros. You can also order through the largest delivery platforms. The restaurant’s own webshop is slightly cheaper for some dishes, and delivery is free from 50 euros. Besides fish dishes, the webshop also offers plenty of delicious wines and T-shirts with funny texts such as KWAL, VISWIJF and ZEESTER.
