Delivery review: Pretty Peas’ delivered meal
In this crazy corona era, restaurants are closed, so we’re having a lovely meal out at home. Luckily, lots of new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting the hospitality industry. Today: Pretty Peas.
Vegan delivery restaurant
It is important that we rethink our (meat) consumption. That is why I am also happy to discover that there is a vegan delivery restaurant: Pretty Peas. As the name suggests, peas are at the heart of it. Naturally, Dutch Pea Soup features prominently on the menu of this Amsterdam lunch spot. As both a starter and a main course. When I think of pea soup, I inevitably think of pork knuckle, pork chops, smoked sausage and richly topped rye bread with generous slabs of cured bacon. But this is vegan. Fortunately, the piglets can continue frolicking undisturbed in their mud bath!
Dark kitchen
There is nothing to be found online about Pretty Peas, except that they deliver. No website, no social media, nothing. It turns out to be a ‘dark kitchen‘; a restaurant focused solely on delivery. The selection consists of various toasted sandwiches and soups. Alongside pea soup, the menu also features lentil soup and pumpkin soup. I go for the pea soup.
The delivery
The delivery bag has an order slip attached to it, printed with the restaurant’s logo. No cute note, no napkins, no peas that I can plant to grow my own pea soup plant for the terrifying moment when the delivery restaurants and supermarkets also have to close. Just a cardboard cup of soup and a bag containing the ordered focaccia.
The soup
Against my better judgment, I stir the soup; perhaps unconsciously, I am hoping to find a stray piece of meat, but the bowl contains nothing but split peas. Unfortunately, the soup is tasteless. The chef has economized on the salt and apparently failed to replace the essential meat stock with another flavoring. Pieces of carrot or leek, to make the soup look somewhat richer than a jar of living green paint from Histor, are also missing. The only flavor comes from the rather salty focaccia, but it cannot save the meal.
Should Pretty Peas join us at the table more often?
Nope. After all the fantastic delivery restaurants that came over last week, this was seriously disappointing. Soulless and tasteless.
How much does it cost?
Not much, if only the soup had been tasty. Because 7.60 euros for a fresh meal soup—I wouldn’t make it myself for that price. The accompanying focaccia costs 2.50 euros. Maybe I was unlucky. Want to put it to the test? Pretty Peas can be ordered via Deliveroo and Uber Eats.
