Delivery review: Scheepskameel’s delivered meal

In this crazy coronavirus era, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily dining out at home. Fortunately, lots of new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have joined the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well and support the hospitality industry. Today: Scheepskameel in Amsterdam.

At Scheepskameel, you’re never turned away. ‘Have a seat, have a glass of wine, we’ll find a table for you in a moment.’ Naturally, this wonderfully hospitable Amsterdam restaurant isn’t abandoning its guests during this viral war, and is delivering its lovely dishes to your home too.
The delivery
The delivery driver is dressed in a black suit, black helmet and black face mask. A space traveller heroically coming to save me from starvation, in this strange universe we’ve all ended up in together. He swings open the delivery box and places the brown paper bag on the doormat. ‘Enjoy, man!’

The packaging
Neat containers in different shapes and sizes. Some of the lids have a symbol on them. I immediately understand the Roman numeral 1. When I open the other containers, a little uncertainty creeps in. Which sauce goes with which dish? The accompanying note advises: ‘don’t forget to add the quince and the sauce on top’. Which of the two sauces? Help. ‘Waiter?’ I call through my empty living room. ‘Waiter!’

The menu
We start with a lukewarm and very successfully prepared palm-kale salad with Lebanese influences. Crisp palm kale and Brussels sprouts, with a fresh, sharp dip made from hangop, sumac and nigella seeds. Simple, but full of flavour. And a healthy dose of vitamins.

For the main course, we ordered pork belly with octopus, an absolute Scheepskameel classic. Fortunately, at home the tenderly cooked pork belly with smoky barbecue octopus tastes just as good as it does in the restaurant. The quince adds a fresh note to this rather intense dish. The oven-roasted baby potatoes with rich mayonnaise are divine. Incidentally, it’s listed on the menu as a starter, but in these complex times you may need to distinguish between the main and side dishes.

May Scheepskameel join us at the table again?
Selbstverständlich! Hospitality can’t, of course, be a one-way street. And I also want to try all those other dishes, because the price-to-quality ratio is excellent. You can taste genuine love in every dish. Well done!
How much does it cost?
Just 15 euros for a main course. Surely you can’t beat that by stockpiling? And there aren’t endless menus to choose from: just 4 starters, 4 main courses and 2 desserts. The wine list is pleasingly concise too. The wine menu of 200 German wines has been reduced to 3: white, red and sparkling, from 19.95 euros. Available to order via Deliveroo.
