Delivery review: the delivery meal from smokehouse Pendergast
During this insane coronavirus period, restaurants are closed, so we’re enjoying eating out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have joined in. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can continue eating well while supporting our beloved hospitality industry. Today: smokehouse Pendergast in Amsterdam.
Pendergast is a smokehouse near Amsterdam’s Westerpark. No, no, it’s not a coffeeshop, but a barbecue restaurant. Here, meat as well as fish is slow-cooked at a low temperature and through the use of smoke, as it should be.
Striking name!
Yes, it refers to a politician from Kansas City who continued serving alcohol defiantly during Prohibition (a ban on the production and sale of alcohol was in effect in America from 1920 to 1933). This period and Kansas, where owner Brandon grew up, serve as inspiration for the restaurant with cocktail bar.
The delivery
The meat is wrapped in white paper, as we know from American barbecue restaurants. I don’t discover the ordered potato mash, but I do find two corn cakes, wrapped like presents. But we start with a suspiciously delicious snack. Olives fried in wonderfully fresh panko pastry, with a spicy buttermilk dip. Light and lovingly made.
The main course
That’s a generous portion of beef brisket (in Dutch: point brisket, but that sounds more like an insult) from Black Angus, smoked over fruitwood. The meat is incredibly tender and juicy, with a delicious crust and smoky flavor. The accompanying BBQ sauce is also delicious, as are the pickled beets.
The salad with roasted pumpkin and crispy chickpeas is a healthy counterpoint to the large portion of meat. The surprise cakes are lightly sweet and wonderfully airy.
May Pendergast join us at the table more often?
Wholeheartedly yes. YEEEES! The dishes are incredibly flavorful and packaged perfectly. The main courses aren’t cheap (26.50 for the Beef brisket), but two people can easily share one, especially if you order some fun cocktail snacks alongside it, such as the fried olives (9 euros) or the pimento cheese (11 euros). And according to what we’ve heard, the smoked turkey and hot-smoked salmon are also highly recommended, so they’re on the list for our next order. Pendergast can be ordered through Uber Eats.
