Delivery review: The Lobby Nesplein’s delivery meal
During this crazy coronavirus period, restaurants are closed, so we’re enjoying eating out at home. Luckily, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have been added. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well and support the hospitality industry. Today: The Lobby Nesplein.
The Lobby is the restaurant of Hotel V Nesplein, just a stone’s throw from my home. A wonderful place to sit outside in summer, enjoy a delicious brunch at the weekend or eat a Flammkuchen during drinks. Because of the fantastic food and stylish interior, but even more because of the always-warm welcome. This time, the roles are reversed and I’m welcoming The Lobby into my home with open arms.
The menu
The delivery menu is limited, but fortunately includes all my personal favourites, including Eggs Benedict, Flammkuchen with bacon, confit veal cheek and pearl barley, and roasted vegetables with pumpkin cream and hazelnuts. The classic Caesar Salad is also now available for home delivery, with roasted Roseval potatoes. So I order that, together with the famous Bacon Flammkuchen.
The delivery
The delivery driver looks bewildered. The journey is so short that he suspects the wrong address was entered. But no, all good! The Flammkuchen is packaged in a luxurious catering box with a delivery window, and clear care has also gone into the packaging of the other items. Entirely in The Lobby’s style, there is an accompanying letter (‘Dear Lobby lovers…’), with some tips for bringing The Lobby’s atmosphere into your home. A small piece of soap has been added for washing your hands, a tealight for a romantic touch and a link to the restaurant’s jazzy playlist. In short, all the attention to detail we’ve come to expect from The Lobby!
The meal
The Flammkuchen tastes just as I remember it. Often, the strength of a dish lies in its simplicity: red onions, bacon and Gruyère on a thin base. Creamy and crisp. The Caesar Salad is delicious too. Generously filled with chicken, croutons, a fresh egg, Parmesan cheese and anchovies. The dressing is provided separately, so the salad stays wonderfully crisp.
Can The Lobby join us more often?
Absolutely! As long as the crisis lasts, I could happily eat a Flammkuchen every day around drinks time. And it costs just 11 euros, as does the Caesar Salad. Those are reasonable prices, although you’re naturally soon tempted to order far too much. Like one of the many delicious and equally reasonably priced wines on offer. But then again, it’s only one coronavirus crisis.
Room service
Tip: working from home and feeling the walls closing in? Then rent a room at Hotel V Fizeaustraat for 49 euros per day and simply order all of The Lobby’s delicious dishes as room service. The room is available during office hours. Working late or enjoying a mini-holiday? That’s possible for an extra 25 euros.
