DGTL introduces the world’s first circular food court

After banning meat and disposable cups and even recycling urine, sustainable festival DGTL is taking things one step further during its upcoming Easter weekend: there will be a fully circular food court.

A what? All the waste created at the food court — which is quite a lot considering the 10,000 vegetarian dishes consumed there each day — will be tipped into a special machine.

From food scraps to biodegradable disposable forks: while you perfect your bunny dance to the tunes of, among others, Job Jobse and Maceo Plex, the machine turns it all into compost. At quite a pace, too: the job is done within 24 hours. The compost is then distributed among participating urban farmers, who use it to grow ingredients for DGTL 2019. There you have it! The circle is complete.

With this system, DGTL hopes not only to move closer to its own mission (becoming the first zero-waste, circular festival in 2020), but also to inspire other festivals to do the same.
