Does corona mean the end of my oh-so-beloved breakfast buffet?!

Never before has anything had such an impact on the hospitality industry as corona. A great deal of thought is going into how to move forward after this pandemic, not only by restaurateurs but also by hoteliers. Because a great deal will change in hotels too. Even the current breakfast buffet is at risk of disappearing forever.

The breakfast buffet: for me, the highlight of a night spent in a hotel. In fact, I base my choice of hotel on the breakfast buffet! And once I’m there, I already make a detailed plan in the evening of what I’m going to put on my plate the next morning. Freshly fried fried eggs, eight kinds of fresh fruit, brioche, crispy bacon and warm chocolate rolls… What a luxurious feast the breakfast buffet is!

Stricter hygiene rules

And that very feast—the one feast you know in advance will be fun—is at risk of changing completely because of corona. The crisis is hitting hard, very hard—the buffets have already been closed for some time, and whether they will ever return remains to be seen. According to Jan Hein Simons of MRP Hotels, the hygiene rules will undoubtedly have to be tightened. Which means that breakfast buffets will also change drastically. No more dutifully lining up behind one another to serve yourself from the chafing dishes and slice your own bread, let alone spearing a slice of cheese with the same fork.

Grabby little hands

Tightening the hygiene rules is of course a good thing. After all, we’ll finally be rid of those little hands in jars of muesli, or people who take food and put it back. But what breakfast buffets will look like after the corona crisis is still unclear. The only thing we know is that the current concept will most likely disappear. And that idea alone hurts. Because a hotel stay will never be the same without the blissful breakfast buffet.
