Dream job alert: iconic pub looking for new landlord (on an island!)
Are you a friendly host, and do you know how to pour a beer? Then you might be in with a chance of landing the job of your dreams. McLoughlin’s Bar, a popular Irish pub on Achill Island, is looking for a new landlord.
That’s pretty big news. McLoughlin’s Bar has been run by the same family for 155 years (!). You guessed it: the McLoughlin family. The current owner is Joseph McLoughlin, a fourth-generation landlord who has been at the helm of the pub for 43 years. According to Joseph, the time has now come to pass on the baton—which is fair enough after more than 40 years of work. The only question is: who will be the lucky candidate?
A McLoughlin behind the bar
Because there is no new generation within the current McLoughlin family who wants to take over McLoughlin’s Bar. Much to Joseph’s sadness, as he would prefer to keep the pub within the family name. It would even break his heart if that didn’t happen. That’s why there’s one important condition for the new landlord: they must be a McLoughlin descendant. That way, the McLoughlin name will continue to proudly adorn the façade.
A search with Heineken
That’s quite a challenge. Because even though millions of people with Irish ancestors live all over the world… You still have to find exactly the right McLoughlin who is interested in taking over the pub in that small island village on the Irish coast. If you don’t live nearby, that’s quite a commitment. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. That’s why Heineken has even been called in to help with this exciting search. As part of the For the Love of Pubs project, they are looking in cities with vibrant Irish communities—such as New York, Sydney and Buenos Aires—for that one Mr or Ms McLoughlin, the perfect candidate for this dream position.
