Drinks in the Beethovenstraat

Call it apéro, aperitivo, cocktail dînatoire or simply a good old Friday afternoon drinks session. Sometimes we just feel like an extensive drinking session instead of dinner. This time, we went for drinks in an unadulterated piece of Amsterdam Zuid: the Beethovenstraat.

Why there?
Even though we shop online more and more, even the most classic shopping streets are brought to life by amazing new hospitality venues. One hotspot after another is opening its doors in Beethoven too. It feels as though you’ve ended up on the set of Gooische Vrouwen: all day long, chic shopping girls and leisure ladies sip cool glasses of Chardonnay, while polished Zuid princes zip past on shiny scooters. We started on the sunny terrace at Vanderveen.

Where?
Vanderveen Bar & Kitchen. This modern all-day bar opened its doors last year. In this stylish ‘living room’ of the Beethoven neighborhood, you can stop by during the day for a sandwich, soup or salad, and in the evening for a classic bistro dish or a top cocktail. Vanderveen is located on a little square in the middle of the broad Beethoven avenue, with high and low tables and swaying palms, because that’s what grows in Zuid.
What did we order?
It was drinks o’clock, so we went for a festive Campari Spritz, accompanied by what may well be the best drinks platter in Amsterdam: a table full of eye-catching and delicious bites: slow-cooked artichoke with herbs and peppers (highly recommended!) and a Dutch cheese board including blue Authentique, a Swarte Toer and goat cheese. We also ordered the smoked salmon blinis and the super-tasty razor clams with chilies, red wine and tomato sauce.

Where else can you go?
The mood was good, so we moved on to the new Bar Kaspar, at the end of the street, in the spot where the slightly dusty Fidelio used to be. A lovely all-day restaurant with delicious gin and tonics, a wide selection of wines and beers, and bites such as kibbeling and baba ganoush. It also has a wonderful corner terrace. For those who still haven’t had enough: in the middle of the street you’ll find Brooks, where they serve killer cocktails. And for the wine lovers among us: Winebar QV will soon open opposite Brooks. All we’re saying is: the Beethoven is buzzing.
