Drumroll: and the winner of the Great Grill Sausage Test 2020 is…
The Great Grill Sausage Test – who hasn’t heard of it – has been won by Slagerij de Bruin from Beusichem. On 11 May, butcher Bartho de Bruin received the first prize in this professional competition organised by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Slagers.
Grill sausage: who didn’t grow up eating it? Although I’ve certainly treated myself to a supermarket version now and then, nothing beats the butcher’s. Spicy crust, juicy meat, preferably still a little warm. Oh man, so delicious.
The best grill sausage in the country
But which butcher should you go to for the very, very best? The jury had the delightful task of tasting and judging the entries from almost 100 butchers based on aroma, flavour, composition and preparation (where can I apply?).
Slagerij de Bruin emerged as the undisputed winner. “This grill sausage has character; you’ll definitely come back for it; a top-quality product,” was the verdict. Butcher Bartho is naturally very proud. “All the hard work and continually improving our product have paid off.”

So that means a trip to Beusichem as soon as possible. Do you live in Culemborg, Zoelmond, Beusichem, Asch, Ravenswaay, Maurik, Eck or Wiel? Then you’re in luck, because the butcher’s shop delivers to homes in those areas. You can order online. Be sure to try their smoked sausage too, as that previously won a prize as well.
You can also go to Uw Slager Bouma in Steenwijkerwold for a good grill sausage; they won second prize. Third prize went to Slager Traiteur Dennis Kuijler from The Hague.
Is grill sausage not your thing? The Grill Sausage Test is just one of the professional competitions organised by the KNS. This year, the KNS is also organising the Tastiest Meatball competition. The Spareribs Trophy has been cancelled this year because of the coronavirus situation.
