Eat like a Local in Chinatown, New York

Eat like a local New York Chinatown Nom Wah Tea Parlor

The Chinese community in New York is huge: the metropolis has not one, but three so-called Chinatowns. Queens’ Chinatown is considered the most authentic, but Brooklyn is where things are truly lively. And are you in Lower Manhattan? Chinatown is still growing there, and you’ll mainly find plenty of hip spots run by the younger generation.

In short: if you have a city trip to New York on your agenda, it’s a good idea to set aside at least three days to eat your way through the different boroughs. Of course, we won’t give away all the contents of the guide here, but we can’t keep these Chinese gems from you:

Chinese gem 1: Fried Dumpling

“An inconspicuous spot, deep in Chinatown, on Mosco Street, by Columbus Park. Five genuine Chinatown dumplings for $1 – it doesn’t get better than that.” – tip from Laura Ferrara

Chinese gem 2: New World Mall

“Take subway line 7 to Flushing, Queens, home to the only real Chinatown, go to the bottom floor of New World Mall and walk through the large, entirely Chinese food section. It’s as if you’re in Shanghai.” – Roberto Serrini

Chinese gem 3: Nom Wah Tea Parlor

Chinese gem 4: Fei Long Market Food Court

“‘Food court’ doesn’t sound appealing until you step into the chaos of Fei Long Market in Brooklyn’s Chinatown. On the way to the entrance of the large Asian supermarket, you pass a space where all kinds of stalls sell cheap food of varying quality: exciting, if that’s your thing. They sell handmade noodles, stir-fries, roast duck and soup finished on the spot with ingredients you can point out yourself. My favorite is the first stall on the left, where you can see through the window how the cooks fold the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) by hand.” – Michelle Maisto

6301 8th Avenue, Sunset Park BK 11220
Open 7 days a week • $$$$

Chinese gem 5: Xi’an Famous Foods

“The lamb and cumin noodles and the hamburger are the most popular dishes here.” – Marisel Salazar

Although there are now twelve locations, Xi’an Famous Foods is especially popular because it has stayed close to the successful formula of the past, when they started out in a basement in Queens. They sold cheap, authentic food from Xi’an in China there. Don’t forget the handmade noodles either.
