Eddie’s food annoyances: overly complicated coffee versus black coffee

Adeline loves food, a lot and often, both at home and out. Usually, that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Sunday Roast, she shares her observations. This time: overly complicated coffee versus black coffee.

My love for coffee is so great that on Spotify I’d rather listen to the playlist ’t Koffiehuis than Morning Tea. I even have a favorite coffee memory. It was 2005, and I was standing in a coffee bar in Rome, where Italians all around me were ordering una caffè in rapid-fire Italian. You could taste the love for coffee in the air, in the words, and in all the gestures. I could have lived there, had someone behind me not asked whether I could order my coffee a little faster. At least, I think that’s what he meant.
“Just black”
In that coffee bar, ristretos and espressos were flying past my ears. Exactly how I like my coffee. You can also wake me up for a nice filter coffee, by the way. I even drink the ones from the higher-end capsule range. But mix anything resembling milk (and I deliberately say resembling) into my cup of joe and I’m out. It’s so disgusting. That’s just my opinion, of course; I’m not judging. I’ve been pouring coffee creamer into my other half’s coffee for years, and you won’t hear me say anything more about that either (ugh!).
As accommodating as I am toward people who stir (something resembling) milk into their coffee, they are just as difficult with me. My inner coffee circle is now used to my strong, black recipe, but the rest of the world can’t get over it. Colleagues think my coffee is so delightfully businesslike (?), baristas at Starbucks start stammering when I order a double espresso, and almost every barista raises their eyebrows practically to their hairline and says, “just black?!”
Far too complicated
Yes, tender-hearted humans. I simply drink my coffee black. By now, I suspect I’m an endangered species, because some people even add something like “wow” when they walk away from my table. Is the oat-milk-cappuccino-drinking generation no longer used to a pure cup of joe? Or has everyone simply forgotten that coffee without additions is the original version of what they eventually drink themselves?
Mind your own overly complicated coffee concoctions with double and single shots, which may not even have REAL milk stirred into them. There! But of course, everyone should drink their coffee exactly how they like it.
