Els has 12,000 kilos of cheese on her hands, who can help?

Familie Mesu (Robbie, Els en Marja)

Calling out all cheese-lovers! Els, or rather, the entire Mesu family from Middelburg, needs your help. They are left with a surplus of 12,000 kilos of mature cheese at their cheese farm, de Schatkamer van Schellach. Will you help eat this cheese?

Together with her sister Marja and son Robbie, Els Mesu runs the family business where the tastiest cheese has been made for 42 years. With eighty dairy cows, a farm shop and a bed & breakfast, they are proud of what they have built, but the coronavirus crisis has hit them hard too. “Normally, almost half of our cheese production goes to the hospitality industry, but the past two years have been anything but normal,” says Els. “Moreover, our farm shop has had far fewer visitors lately than before.” The result? A surplus of 12,000 kilos of mature cheese.

Even more cheese

This story may sound familiar to you. And that could be right. Last year, Breda Maakt Mij Blij took action for a 15,000-kilo cheese surplus. Back then, it was the monks from Berkel-Enschot who sounded the alarm. One of them, Brother Isaac, pointed Els toward the Breda-based platform.

Els: “I know Brother Isaac from the Kaasdagcommissie Zuid-Nederland, and he speaks very highly of the rescue campaign and the way the whole country took action.” So Thibaud van der Steen of Breda Maakt Mij Blij had no doubts when Els’s email came in. “The cheese campaign for the monks was our most successful campaign ever. So you could say that we really know our cheese here,” Thibaud jokes.

Proceeds partly donated to charity

Through Breda Maakt Mij Blij, you can order the mature crumbly cheese. By itself, but also in combination with delicious local beer, Zeeland mustard and artisanal cheese biscuits. €2.50 will go to Giro555 for every piece of cheese sold, and €5 will go to the same cause for every cheese package sold.
