These Memes Show What They Really Think of You at the Supermarket

Anyone who has ever worked in a supermarket, or still does, knows how annoying some customers can be. Fortunately, there’s the Instagram account @supermarktmemes, for a daily dose of understanding and humor.

The account is full of relatable situations. Especially for people who work or have worked in a supermarket, but also for people who have never worked there but can still empathize with what it’s like.

We spoke to the creator of the account about how it came about. Since he still works in a supermarket and would like to keep that job despite these memes, he prefers to remain anonymous.

How and why did you start this account?

“About a year ago, I made some memes and shared them with friends. They thought they were really funny, and that’s when I got the idea to share them with other people too. Instagram was the best platform for that.”

Where do you get your inspiration?

“I’ve worked—and still work—a lot in supermarkets myself. You experience so much when you’ve spent thousands of hours there; customers and managers who act ‘annoyingly,’ for example. You can use those situations to create a meme that reflects reality. Of course, some memes should be taken with a grain of salt.”

How do people respond to the account?

“Very positively. I also try not to ‘make fun’ of people too much; they’re mainly relatable situations. But only a handful of people know that I’m behind this account. So sometimes people send me my own memes without realizing it. Very funny.”

And do supermarkets themselves respond to it?

“They definitely keep an eye on accounts like this, but I’ve never received any comments from them.”

You now have 31K followers. When did it really start to grow?

“At first, the number of followers grew only slowly. But after a few months, I had a meme featuring Kanye West that ‘exploded.’ Suddenly I gained a lot of followers, and since then it has continued to grow very steadily. I think that’s also because I upload one meme every day; I never deviate from that.”

What do you hope to achieve with the account?

“At the moment, I don’t have a goal, and of course you have certain follower numbers in mind (50k, 100k), but I expect that eventually the growth will level off. I see it this way: How many people in the Netherlands work in supermarkets or in other environments that resemble supermarkets?”

What is your personal favorite meme on the account? And why?

“My favorite meme is the one I uploaded on August 16, 2019. I find this meme so relatable because customers are often inclined to blame store employees for things they actually have no control over (for example, empty shelves because an item isn’t available for delivery). In this meme, the cashier can’t do anything about it because there’s an error in the system, yet customers still get angry at ‘us.’ I understand this, because at that moment they can only blame one person; that’s simply how people are.”
