Expensive beer due to climate change?

If you weren’t worried about climate change yet, this shocking news report might change that. If things continue like this, beer prices could double. Nooooo!

The magazine Nature Plants published a study showing that increasingly high temperatures and drought have disastrous consequences for the production of barley, the main ingredient in beer. Apart from water, that is. Because it grows less well under these kinds of extreme conditions, it becomes scarcer and therefore more expensive.

What’s next?

The magazine itself points out that this is, of course, not the worst consequence of climate change, although it may feel that way to some people. In the most extreme case, beer prices will double, and we should certainly expect a 15 percent price increase. Other favorites that will become more expensive? Chocolate, coffee and tea, and even cigars. Although the latter are, of course, not meant to be eaten.
