Expensive vanilla ice creams

A summer without vanilla ice cream? A poor harvest in Madagascar is making ice cream expensive. 

Bad news for ice cream makers, but especially for ice cream lovers. The vanilla harvest in Madagascar was so poor this year that the price has risen by 150 percent. That means expensive vanilla ice creams. Vanilla is the second-most expensive spice; saffron is even more expensive. The price is now so high because it can only be harvested at one specific moment, namely when the flower opens.

Because of the price increase and scarcity, there are fears that the plants will be stolen. To prevent this, they are taken out of the ground prematurely. This does not benefit the flavor and results in an even worse price-quality ratio.
