Extra costs for plastic disposable packaging from 1 July
Frequent users of UberEATS, Thuisbezorgd and takeaway meals, take note: from 1 July, this will become a little more expensive for you. From that date, businesses that serve their food (takeaway or delivery) will be required to charge extra for plastic disposable bags. This new regulation is (of course) being introduced to reduce the use of plastic.
What is striking is that the business itself may determine this surcharge. So it is not a fixed amount or a specific percentage of the order. It is also notable that the proceeds go to the owners themselves, so they can invest them in alternatives that are better for the environment.
What are the alternatives?
The most common alternative is, of course, paper or cardboard, and many businesses already use this as standard. This also applies to the disposable cutlery you may receive with your order: if it is made of plastic, an additional charge will also be applied.
This regulation is only temporary, by the way, because from 1 January 2024 all plastic will be banned at takeaway and delivery restaurants (and for on-site consumption). That will be quite a task, because how, for example, will iced lattes be served at Starbucks? And how will sandwiches be packaged at, for example, petrol stations, which also fall under this regulation?
Offices and amusement parks will also have to come up with alternatives to plastic disposable packaging and cups. There is only one exception to this rule that will take effect next year: if a company uses 75 to 90 percent of its disposable plastic for high-quality recycling.
