IMG_0375-mom says im special

We all know language Nazis, but have you heard of the chicken Nazi? Meet senior editor Steffi. Eaten chicken? Chances are she thinks you haven’t gnawed it clean enough yet and will demonstrate how it’s done. And that’s not the only strange eating habit she has.

Always in the fridge

“Coca-Cola Zero. Nobody believes me, but I genuinely like it better than regular Coke. Not to mention Pepsi. If I ask for Coke in a café and get Pepsi, I’m genuinely disappointed.”

Favorite drink

“Wine.”

Favorite family recipe

“Can other people’s family recipes count too? In that case, this ultimate roti chicken recipe from a friend of mine. Better than all the chicken rotis I’ve ever eaten (and believe me, that’s a lot). My mother-in-law’s lentil soup and my dad’s nasi goreng with fish are also not to be missed, by the way. I just haven’t managed to wheedle the recipes out of them yet…”

Favorite ingredient

“Aubergine. Emma said it already: aubergine is simply the best vegetable in the world. I can only agree.”

The first time I drank alcohol…

“Was on vacation in France with my parents. We had lunch with a French family; they asked my parents if I was allowed to have wine too, and my parents were fine with it. I was 4 years old.”

Favorite hangover food

“Gözleme. In Turkey, you’ll find them on every street corner (and even at sea. As in: a gözleme boat, yes, really). Here, I get them from the stall at the Ten Katemarkt, followed by baklava, and I’m in the best mood again.”

Guilty pleasure

“People are going to find this really gross, but okay, here goes: ontbijtkoek with peanut butter (the crunchy kind) and chocolate sprinkles. Oh man, it’s so deliciously sweet, salty, sticky and crunchy.”

I hate

“Wet socks. And truffle adoration.”

Never again

“Noodle soup with pork belly in Nagaland (Northeast India). In itself, a great dish, if it weren’t for the fact that they eat the pork belly here with both skin and hair.”

When I don’t feel like cooking…

“I hope my housemate does.”

Favorite food series

“Whether I’d eaten or not, Las crónicas del taco on Netflix made me instantly hungry time and again.”

The best cooking tip I’ve ever received

“From Emma: buy chickpea flour, add water, pepper and salt. Throw it in a pan and voilà: an irresistible chickpea pancake.”
