Pink Insta lettuce

Hooray, more and more often we see a special type of lettuce popping up, and it is… pink – so Instagram is going wild. The radicchio del veneto is related to chicory and is grown in northeastern Italy, in the Veneto region. How does the lettuce get that light pink color? The head grows under the sand, which means the plant’s stems receive no sunlight. And is it tasty too? Apparently so. The lettuce has a mildly sweet flavor with a hint of bitterness, and the leaves have a crisp texture.

What does your egg horoscope say?

Are you a reliable hard-boiled egg or a neat, fluffy omelet? Check out Bon Appetit’s egg horoscope, and you’ll know. Very handy, because then you can spend the rest of the month eating the egg that matches your zodiac sign.

Invention: crumb-proof keyboard

The flat keyboard found in the latest MacBooks can’t handle crumbs very well. That’s why Apple has been working on a special keyboard that won’t let food scraps get inside. And it seems to be finished: Apple recently applied for a patent for its crumb-proof keyboard. Soon you can simply devour unlimited croissants, chips and cookies above your laptop without worrying about whether the poor thing will survive all that abuse.

Wine festival

Don’t have any plans for this weekend yet? Maybe the Wine Festival in Amsterdam is an idea. At the Westergasfabriek, you can enjoy an abundance (300 varieties!) of wine for three days. The theme: the Southern Hemisphere. So you’ll taste wine from countries such as Argentina, Chile and New Zealand. You can buy tickets online.
