We all have them: favorite flavors, ingredients, and kitchen tools. FavorFlavs we always reach for again and again. These are ours.

Marmite

Rule-loving Danes banned Marmite in 2011, but reversed that decision three years later under heavy pressure. The British vitamin B-rich brewer’s yeast spread with its strong smell and extremely salty taste is one of those products you ‘either love or hate’.

The English preferably spread it on their toasted naked sandwich in the morning. And abroad, the dark brown jar with its yellow lid, rounded belly, and picture of a marmite (French for stew pot) is pure comfort food from home for them. Non-Brits also enjoy spreading the paste. But beware: don’t accidentally reach for ‘impostors’ such as the Australian Vegemite.
