FavorFlav’s Favorites #1: juicy chicken thighs, kale bouquets and house cocktails

Have you ever wondered where that impossible name ‘FavorFlav’ comes from? Yes, it’s a nod to the rapper, but it stands for ‘Favorite Flavors’. And what exactly are those? From podcasts to hotspots and from secret ingredients to the latest gadgets. In this fortnightly feature, we share our favorites with you.

Laura: “On a rainy day in 2019, I ate at a friend’s place; she had cooked wonderfully and we had a hangover. She introduced me to the best feel-good cooking movie ever: The Hundred-Foot Journey. Don’t watch a trailer, don’t read the intro, trust me: watch this movie. Ideal for cheering you up during the gloomy days of January. Just make sure you have something tasty to eat within reach (preferably Indian). You’re guaranteed to get hungry!”

Lauretta: “Last week, I visited Renzo’s in Amsterdam for the first time. This Italian delicatessen is known for its freshly baked and generously topped ciabatta sandwiches. I went for the ‘chicken dino’ sandwich: juicy pieces of chicken thigh with homemade sun-dried tomato mayo. And yes, this version is undoubtedly the tastiest sandwich of the week. Besides the delicious ciabattas, you can also get a plate of fresh pasta at Renzo’s—and buy the best Italian balsamic vinegar here. In short, my new favorite spot in Oud-Zuid!”

Sharon: “At the risk of sounding very frumpy: recently, I was given a kale bouquet. Yes, it’s exactly what you think: a bunch of flowers that also incorporates a few kale leaves. Kale on the table, but slightly different. I love that one of the best-known winter vegetables—isn’t it crazy that the Dutch eat more than five million kilos of kale every year?—is not only delicious and healthy, but aesthetically pleasing too. And wonderfully sustainable: has your bouquet finished blooming? You can make a healthy smoothie with the kale leaves.” The one in the photo was made by Bloemenweelde in Amsterdam, but of course you can ask your own florist or get started yourself.

Steffi: “If I’ve become addicted to anything over the past year, it’s podcasts. I listen to all sorts of things, but one podcast that is absolutely worth listening to is ‘Wat schaft de podcast’. The name is already great, but so is the content. Home cooks Jonas Nouwen and Jeroen Doucet talk about food and drink in such a way that your mouth immediately starts watering. No fuss or hot air, but practical tips, great recipes and fun background information. Give it a listen!”
Delilah: We have a house cocktail, the Boston Sour. We certainly don’t drink it every day, but at the end of a busy workweek, sinking into the sofa with one of these guys is hard to beat. We also like making them on game nights, and recently a friend showed up on the doorstep with this greeting: ‘I heard I’m supposed to ask for a Boston Sour here.’ Well, welcome!
Here’s how to make it:
- 1 part whiskey
- 1/4 part simple syrup (or, our own twist: ginger lemonade syrup)
- 1/4 part lemon juice
- 1/8 part egg white (we use pasteurized egg white from a carton, from Two Chicks). I’m told that the egg white makes it a Boston Sour rather than a Whiskey Sour.
- ice cubes, a cocktail shaker—shake away, then serve with even more ice. And if you really want to make an effort: add a maraschino cherry
