Favorflav’s favorites #4: Babà al Limoncello. Three bombs. Full of alcohol.

Have you ever wondered where that impossible name ‘FavorFlav’ comes from? Yes, it’s a nod to the rapper, but it stands for ‘Favorite Flavors’. And what exactly are those? Everything from podcasts to hotspots and from secret ingredients to the latest gadgets. In this fortnightly feature, we share our favorites with you.

Sharon: “During Roberto’s pop-up (the Italian restaurant in the Hilton in Amsterdam) at the ‘Little Italy’ festival, I ate Babà al Limoncello. A typical dessert from Naples: sponge cake soaked in Limoncello and rum. Three bombs. Full of alcohol. Incredibly delicious! At home, I immediately looked for a recipe to make it myself. I haven’t tried it yet, but if you want to follow my example: here’s a recipe.”

Delilah: “I’m quite fond of those grilled chickens from the butcher. A chicken like that can be a godsend on busy days; yesterday, for example, was one of those hectic evenings when everyone still had to train or attend a meeting or be picked up or whatever. I quickly put together a meal salad from potatoes boiled in their skins (okay, I had cooked those earlier), celery, capers, black olives, and a dollop of mayo (okay, mixed with a spoonful each of hummus, cream cheese and vinaigrette) and shredded three-quarters of such a chicken into pieces. And today I made a sandwich with the leftovers, mayo, lettuce and jalapeños. Absolutely top-notch.”
Sabina: “I can keep this brief: Tony cinnamon biscuit milk.”

Steffi: “The bible of Indonesian cuisine hasn’t been published yet, but somehow I’ve already got a lemper ayam recipe from Maureen Tans. So I made them this week. Tip 1: enlist help if you’re making a large batch (like I was); it’s quite a job, so some company and wine are more than welcome. Tip 2: this tutorial by Lemper Jop. Because really: the cat in the background, the bunch of pink tulips, Jop’s carefree hair. It doesn’t get any more convivial. Tip 3: Be prepared for your home and body to smell like a toko from head to toe. But hey: at least you’ll have a mountain of irresistible lempers. Now just wait for that beautiful bible and then… Selamat makan!”

Laura: “When I miss Portugal, I go to Casa Bocage on Haarlemmerstraat. Friendly Portuguese people behind the till, the tastiest Pasteis de Natas in Amsterdam (almost as delicious as the ones there), delicious Portuguese coffee and other treats I miss. Such as my favorite soft drink: Sumol de Laranja. One glass of this on Sunday morning and your hangover disappears like snow in the sun.”
