Favorite supermarket: Landmarkt

Doosjes met verse aardbeien op de markt

Sometimes you decide at the last minute that you’re craving scallops, an amazing steak or a crispy and airy loaf of bread. In the evening or at the weekend, you can hardly get these anywhere anymore, except if you live near Amsterdam’s Landmarkt.

The one on Van Woustraat is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The one in Schellingwoude closes a little earlier but is 1200m2 in size. A trip here at the weekend is the dream of every grocery lover.

Top suppliers

They work with a number of small suppliers offering top-quality products. The fish is displayed on ice and freshly cut for you, like a mini fishmonger’s in the supermarket. If you’re waiting, be sure to take a look in the refrigerated section, where you’ll find excellent mackerel and salmon salads for toast or bread. All the bread comes from Le Perron, one of our favorite bakers. Crispy baguettes, multigrain, sourdough spelt bread or creamy boterkoek. All equally delicious.

Isn’t that expensive?

All the meat is antibiotic-free, whether you go for a Gildehoen chicken or a Beemsterlant’s pig. Isn’t that expensive? Not at all. The prices are comparable to those at a regular butcher and fishmonger; I recently bought a beautiful piece of halibut fillet there for just € 2.50. So there’s no reason to let that put you off. Especially if you keep an eye on the special offers, you’ll never spend too much money here.

Full bag

The only danger is that you’ll buy out the entire shop, because in the corner with dried sausage and cheese you’ll want to grab everything. You can also come here for genuinely good crème fraîche or ice cream from Frozen Dutch (favorite flavor: vanilla, raspberry, kletskop).

Tip: I mainly come here for fresh products. If you do all your weekly grocery shopping here, it is a little more expensive than at a regular supermarket (but then you do get better quality).
