First: the world’s first low-carb fries

It’s no secret that we love fries. Fries with a homemade sauce of sambal badjak, mayo and ketchup, Patatje Paay or as a kapsalon. But yes, it is pretty greasy, and shouldn’t there be another way, thought Leon de Winter. Enter: the world’s first low-carb fries.

In 2012, Dutch writer Leon de Winter was told that he had to start following a low-carb diet. So he had to say goodbye to his favorite snack: fries. Together with his cousin and cardiac surgeon León Eijsman, he began searching for low-carb fries. The search yielded little within the existing retail range, but the fact that low-carb potatoes were being grown was reason enough for both Leons to start developing fries themselves.
Low-carb potatoes
The low-carb potatoes of the ‘Colomba’ variety proved to be highly suitable, provided the fries were coated with a completely natural coating. Ultimately, after a seven-year development process, they had succeeded. And hooray: the revolutionary product, called Leon&León , is now on the shelves. With 30% fewer carbohydrates, calories and fat than other fries, Leon&León is also sourced from the Netherlands.
Uh, how does that work?
Although most potatoes are naturally high in carbohydrates, only low-carb potatoes are used for Leon&León. The natural coating makes it possible to prepare the potato as fries and means no extra salt is needed. The fries were specially developed for preparation in an air fryer, so no (unhealthy) frying fat is needed either. The fries performed best in tests in the Philips Airfryer. In the video below, made at the FavorFlav Food Top 100, Leon de Winter explains how it works.
You can find Leon&León fries in the freezer section at 660 Albert Heijn stores for € 1.99. Besides being low-carb and delicious, Leon&León is also gluten-free and vegan friendly. And believe us: they’re delicious!
