You’re Italian, you live in Amsterdam and you’re crazy about good food. So where do you go to get your culinary fix? We coaxed Marco Camplani into revealing his five top-secret spots.

“I get the feeling that people from Southern Europe have a much stronger bond with their food than Northern Europeans,” says Marco Camplani (@alf_in_trouble). That was a big adjustment when he moved to the Netherlands eleven years ago. “The quality of the food was very low. In recent years, I’ve seen it changing: it’s getting better. At first, I didn’t know where to take friends because nowhere served food that was good enough for us, but now it’s sometimes hard to choose!”

Perfect pizzas from a tiny oven

“The best pizzas, as authentic as they come, are made by Piccolo Forno Vinz. With his small pizza oven, he regularly sets up at markets such as Sunday Market at the Westergasterrein. And Vinz makes that delicious mozzarella for the pizza himself. This is the taste of a real pizza.”

Spicy peppers

“When I want to treat myself to some delicious old-school carbs, I go sans gene to La Fucina, on Javastraat. Truly authentic food – especially the Pizza al Taglio. These are square slices of pizza, hugely popular as street food in Italy. You really have to try them. What do I order? Traditional lasagna, or the panino with mortadella and green peppers, an amazingly surprising combination.”

Romance on the menu

“Of course, you wouldn’t take a date to a place where you’re going to eat green peppers. No, then you go to Impero Romano. For modern Italians, it may feel a little dated, but for Dutch people, this is a romantic Italian experience. Good food and excellent service. Tip: tagliolini al parmigiano or paccheri amatriciana.”

Perfect spianata in the 9 Streets

“Are they new, or have they been around a little longer? In any case, I only discovered them recently: Sous Bar Bistro. When I’m in the 9 Streets, I like to drop in here. Never disappointed. Good lunch menu. Definitely order the spianata or focaccia.”

A little bit of home

“I eat a real old-fashioned Neapolitan pizza – and those are the best in the world, you know – at one of the Cuciniello restaurants. My favorite is Mangiassai in Oost. It’s truly a little bit of home sweet home in Amsterdam…”
