The seven best cheese boards in Amsterdam

Kaasplank

With breakfast and lunch, during drinks, after dinner, and yes, even in the middle of the night: a good plate of cheese is something you can wake us up for. So, for all the cheese lovers among us: here’s where you’ll find the city’s tastiest cheese boards.

Envy

Envy on the Prinsengracht is a breeding ground for culinary talent, where you can enjoy gastronomic bites without any fuss. Michelin-star quality in jeans, so to speak. But Envy is also known for its cheese selection. Naturally served with the perfect bread and homemade compotes.

Wolf Atelier

In the wonderful world of chef Michael Wolf, every detail matters. After a series of beautifully balanced dishes, Wolf ends the meal with the same finesse. His cheese board is like a perfect work of art, with different shades and textures. Finished with homemade quince jam and walnuts.

Le Coeur Bistrothèque

At Le Coeur in the Nine Streets, everything is French. And not just a petit peu, but truly French. With an interior straight from the City of Love and classic dishes such as bouillabaisse and steak tartare, you’ll imagine yourself in Paris. But the real heart-stealer comes in the form of a cheese board – or plateau de fromage. Naturally, in keeping with this chauvinistic nation, featuring only French cheeses.

212

Every evening, an intimate group of 24 people surrounds the kitchen counter of chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot. Restaurant 212 strips high-end cuisine of its unnecessary etiquette. No separate tables, chef’s menu or wine pairing here. You watch directly from the counter, choose your own wine with the sommelier in the wine cellar, and with dessert you’re presented with a large table full of Dutch cheeses.

Proeflokaal Kef

Do you really, really love cheese? Then put Kef on your list – in bright red pen and with lots of exclamation marks. Because if there’s anywhere to go for delicious cheese, it’s Fromagerie Abraham Kef. And Kef also happens to have a wonderful tasting room. Next to the shop in Amsterdam Noord, you can pull up a chair for fantastic cheese boards with wine, sherry or even (specialty) beer. Or book a tasting where you’ll be served not only plenty of cheese and wine, but also the most wonderful stories from the cheesemakers.

Mr. & Mrs. Watson

Mr. & Mrs. Watson shows that vegan cuisine offers endless possibilities. Wait… vegan?! Weren’t we just talking about cheese boards? Exactly. Because at Mr. & Mrs. Watson, alongside all kinds of other plant-based dishes, you can enjoy their award-winning vegan cheese. The beautifully arranged cheese boards not only look amazing, their flavors are also almost impossible to distinguish from the animal-based version. So whether you’re vegan or not, this one belongs in the best cheese collection too.

Shiraz

There’s no better marriage than cheese and wine. And at wine bar Shiraz, near Leidseplein, they know that all too well. That’s why, alongside their enormous – and we mean enormous – selection of wines, they also serve a cheese board that’s definitely worth mentioning. The classic board has an ideal mix of hard and soft cheeses, and with the addition of grapes, figs and nuts, it’s exactly how we like to see a cheese board. Add a good glass of Shiraz and leave it at that.
