10 x deliciously disgusting #4

Practically inexhaustible: the series about the ‘disgusting’ food and drinks we secretly (or completely openly) keep happily devouring together. From fish fingers to microwave bapao buns and pudding rolls – and we’re nowhere near done with our disgusting-delicious binge…

Cordon bleu
Once a weekly staple, but sadly ousted by Meatfree Mondays and other quinoa-related affairs. Yet, be honest: that golden-brown crust around a just-a-little-too-tough fillet, with a heavenly surprise of ham and “extremely fake cheese” (as we call it in the editorial office) inside—that’s something you simply want, right?
Cafeteria toasties
If, like us, you spend hours of your weekend on or beside a sports field, or used to, then you know that very little beats a soggy toastie that goes straight, ratsch, from its own plastic individual wrapping, hop, into the sandwich press. Wait a moment, make limp small talk with the person next to you at the bar, add a massive dollop of ketchup to that usually slightly underbaked factory-made delight, and tuck in.
Microwave poffertjes
Yes, definitely up there with the previously crowned microwave pancakes, but something about that round, powdered-sugar-dusted fluffiness, plus the fact that you can pop them straight into your mouth, means they deserve their own place on our horribly deliciously disgusting list.
Pork cracklings
Admittedly, we couldn’t remember the name for a moment. It had been so long since these things graced many a drinks table that they made us intensely nostalgic. Brittle, crunchy and mega-salty; this calls for a cold beer on the side. Preferably tonight.

‘Cheese’ rice cakes
There isn’t any cheese involved in these thick rice cakes with a vague, orange, powdery chemical coating. But admit it: when you get your hands on one, you can’t help licking that cheese dust off first. Admit it or forever hold your tongue.
Chocolate coins
They’re back, cosily reunited with all the other Sinterklaas sweets, and about time too. Because the fiddling with that little wrapper is unfailingly rewarded with that soft disc of chocolate containing the bare minimum of cocoa, which is always already partly melting from the warmth of those same fiddling hands.
Canned peaches
What is it about those orange-yellow halves in syrup that makes them so irresistible? The fact that they vaguely resemble little buttocks? That highly specific texture (soft, but still something to bite through)? The fact remains that they’re delicious to slurp down just as they are, but also to drape generously over your plain-ass vanilla ice cream. Our motto: always keep some at home.

Rhubarb compote
There’s no doubt about applesauce—it’s simply delicious—but rhubarb compote from a jar was always a little… difficult, wasn’t it? Yes, sweet, and yes, sour, so that’s great, but those stringy fibres—we were already quite conflicted about them as children. But if you gave me a jar and a spoon now, I’ll dig in!
Cherry Coke
How this soft drink manages to taste neither like cola nor like cherry is a miracle. What it does taste like, according to some: iron-flavoured stone fruit. But it just won’t disappear from the shelves, so it definitely has fans!
Olvarit jars
We saved the most disgusting for last: some people here drew the line at the fruit purées (which are truly divine, with the same creamy deliciousness as those canned peaches), while others even swear by the pumpkin and green-bean mush. Hats off—properly hardcore!
