This is where you need to go: the Slow Food: Still Lifes from the Golden Age exhibition at the Mauritshuis in The Hague.

Until 25 June, foodies can feast their eyes here. The exhibition consists of ‘meal still lifes‘ that will make your mouth water. Chunks of cheese, beautiful cakes, colourful fruit, roasted birds on 16th-century tableware and pieces of freshly baked bread.

Slow Food Festival
Because visiting this exhibition will probably leave your stomach rumbling, it’s best to go on one of the Saturdays when a Slow Food Festival is also taking place. At the museum, on 22 April, 20 May and 17 June, you can not only visit the exhibition but also attend talks, take part in workshops, watch films and taste food. I say: block it out in your calendar.

Themes
On 22 April, the festival focuses on fish and meat. At various locations in the museum, you can taste sausage or oysters and cockles. You can also learn about the history of meat or take part in a food quiz with Jannie van der Heijden (Heel Holland Bakt) as quizmaster. During a talk in which presenter Andrea van Pol interviews food scientist Jaap Seidell, pressing questions will be answered and food myths banished.

On 20 May, the focus is on drinks and glassware, and on 17 June you’ll learn all about vegetables and fruit. The programme for those dates has not yet been announced.

After spending a morning wandering through the museum, you should come here for a delicious lunch.
