Last week, we wrote about the pranks colleagues pull on one another in the hospitality industry. But it turns out this is the gift that keeps on giving. There are plenty more stories like these to tell, so we collected 10 more pranks. All revealed by you, for which many thanks!
Everyone who works or has worked in hospitality knows them: the pranks employees pull on one another. And although they’re often very silly, they do keep things nice and convivial during work. FavorFlav’s Sharon still remembers all too well how, as a rookie, she had to clean invisible stains (and was first sent to Sligro to buy special invisible-stain cleaner for the hospitality industry…) and how chefs were driven completely crazy when people played pranks with kitchen timers or—as is a classic—switched around the labels on the spice jars.

1. ‘Send someone to fetch a pan of seawater to rinse the mussels.’ Of course I would have fallen for that as a newbie. A long walk along the beach with such a heavy bucket…
2. ‘Make a dessert for a “special” customer. Fill raspberries with blueberries.’ Now that I’m writing it down… it sounds delicious! Labor-intensive, though.
3. ‘Send someone to the painter to buy bluing for the Cordon Bleu.’ Does anyone really fall for this?
4. ‘Ask the new intern to look for left-handed knives.’ Because scissors for left-handed people exist too, after all.
5. ‘Send colleagues to get Corona glasses.’ Although I did see Corona on tap in a glass recently?
6. ‘Go for a walk with a lobster on a leash so the animal would be less stressed.’ I have my doubts about this one…
7. ‘Send someone who was new to the kitchen to the store to buy a closed-holed pan.’ Umhh…
8. ‘Send someone out for fat-free oil.’ For people on a special diet, presumably 😉
9. ‘Have them count the fries left over in the evening because they need to be “written off”.’ If your employer is extremely penny-pinching, you’ll fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
10. ‘Arrange the ice cubes fifo-style in the ice machine.’ You know: First in First out, arranging the stock. This would really appeal to my OCD. But of course, it’s another typical hospitality prank!
